Roots

I’ve been trying to grow some rose bushes on my balcony for years. Most die during the winter because I suck at wrapping them up and stuff, but one of them seemed to hang on, year after year, popping up a couple of branches and a couple of roses before succumbing to some insect.

So I’ve finally had enough of this and was just going to throw out the entire thing, and I was thinking that I’d just be able to quickly get rid of the soil… but I had to hack and hack and hack away at it, because the soil was now 40% roots. Just matted with roots. From this rose bush. The above is what was left after hacking away at it.

I’m just impressed. To grow a root system that extensive while barely seeming alive above the soil.

But I vanquished it! It’s gone! It only took me a couple days! I should buy some sharper kind of digging tool!
