Book Club 2025: The Paris Review #124

Hey, #100! And it’s an issue of The Paris Review.

Speaking of which, what was up with the cover design this era?

They don’t really scream “buy me”, do they?

This one is from the early 90s, and I’ve been reading it over lunch the past couple weeks.

The interview with Italo Calvino is fun.

Ah, I’ve read this Lorrie Moore short story in a short story collection before, but I had to read it again. It’s about what happens after the absolutely worst has happened.

There’s art…

I liked this poem.

Oh right — there’s an interview with Grace Paley, and it intrigued me so much that I was going to buy one of her books, but I forgot. Let’s fix that now…

There; done.

I really liked this thing by Burroughs. Don’t we all have to get to Denmark, after all?

The Paris Review was pretty extensive around this time — it’s 300 pages long, which means that they have room to chuck in things that they wouldn’t dream of these days (when it’s at least 100 pages shorter). This thing by William T. Vollmann is 80 pages long and is pretty impenetrable… but still enjoyable to read, even though I’m not actually sure what I just read.
