So I was wondering what could be causing that blue colour. I futzed around in Emacs for a bit and discovered that if you select text with the mouse, you get that colour. Who knew?
The alarm clock uses a touch screen, so I thought that perhaps the touch screen had started freaking out and generating events continuously. I removed the touch panel from the Xorg config, rebooted…
And the problem has disappeared.
